The FRFA

The FRFA – what we’re here for

The Recreation Field sits at the heart of village life — 11.5 acres of green space, play, dog-walking, football, cricket, fêtes, quiet picnics, and last-minute gatherings. The Pavilion is the well-equipped, welcoming hub that plays host to a myriad of village events. Together they’re one of Fownhope’s most-used, best-loved community spaces.

The Fownhope Recreation Field Association (FRFA) exists to look after all of it: the field, the Pavilion, the car park, the bookings, the upkeep, the ideas, the improvements, the conversations, the tricky bits, and the joyful ones.

It’s a charity run entirely by volunteers — and because of that, the village gets a first-class facility without the first-class price tag

What we do

At its core, the FRFA has one charitable purpose:

To provide for the inhabitants of Fownhope and the neighbourhood – in the interests of social welfare – facilities for recreation and leisure time occupation, for the purpose of relaxation and with the object of improving the conditions of life for the said inhabitants.

In practice, that means:

Looking after the field and Pavilion day-to-day
We manage all bookings, keep the grass cut, maintain the buildings, handle repairs, run safety checks, empty bins, and keep everything looking loved. It’s the quiet, steady graft that makes the place feel relaxed and well-cared-for.

Planning improvements that make the site even better
From the new patio to updated signage, from EV chargers to rethinking the car-park layout, we’re always looking ahead. Some things appear overnight; others take a year of gentle nudges — but everything is guided by what’s best for the community.

Working hand-in-hand with the Parish Council
They own the field; we run it. It’s a partnership that allows the space to stay flexible, responsive, and rooted in what residents actually want. Our management plans and decisions are shared openly and shaped together.

Managing money carefully
Every penny raised is spent on improving or maintaining the field and Pavilion. Nothing goes elsewhere. Accounts are reported yearly, independently audited, and shaped by the needs of the site.

Encouraging community use and involvement
Football, cricket nets, parties, musicians’ jam sessions, walking clubs, picnics, school events — the Rec is for everyone. It’s also home to Strollers Cricket Club, and on Sundays you’ll find Phoenix FC making good use of the pitches. Membership is automatically open to every Fownhope resident, and representatives from groups who regularly use the space are routinely invited to committee meetings to share their thoughts.

How we work

Led by volunteers
The Pavilion heating turns on, the grass gets cut, the bookings run smoothly, and the place stays welcoming because volunteers give their time, skills and care. Without them, the site simply wouldn’t function.

Guided by a committee of trustees
Nine trustees (six elected by residents, three appointed by the Parish Council) keep things running, supported by additional non-voting members who organise practical work or represent regular user groups.

Open to everyone
Every resident of Fownhope is automatically a member. Anyone can attend AGMs, propose ideas, raise issues or get involved. It’s a village space, shaped by the village.

Always improving, always listening
From dealing with dog-waste concerns to welcoming a new football club, from tackling vandalism to exploring future investments (yes — even robotic mowers!), the FRFA keeps its ear to the ground and adapts as the community’s needs change.

Who we are

The committee of the FRFA is made up of nine trustees. Six are elected and three are nominated by the Parish Council.

In addition, Denzil Biggs is our Life President in recognition for all he has done for the FRFA and the village.

Why it matters

A recreation field isn’t just a stretch of grass — it’s a place where a village breathes.

The FRFA’s job is to keep it welcoming, safe, useful, well-maintained and full of possibility, so that everyone — families, dog-walkers, footballers, strollers, picnickers, residents young and old — can enjoy it today and long into the future.

It’s one of Fownhope’s greatest assets.

And it works because the community itself keeps it alive.
