SUMMARY:Community Library
DESCRIPTION:The Community Library was opened in 2012\, with the help of the Parish Council and use of the Community Room at Faulkner House. \nIt is a warm comfortable room with easy chairs and everyone is welcome for a chat and a cuppa. \nThere is a large selection of fiction and non-fiction\, and a strong section on local history\, travel and walking books/OS maps. \nWith over 5000 items including DVDs and CDs and a good choice of children’s books\, there is something for everyone. \nWe have excellent links with St Mary’s School and welcome pre-school children every Wednesday in term time to borrow books and hear a story. \nAll residents of Fownhope and nearby villages are eligible to join and membership is free thanks to the friendly volunteer team\, help from the Parish Council and donations from the Friends of Fownhope Library.

DESCRIPTION:Join our friendly and active group as we carry out conservation work in local nature reserves. \nIt’s always a good day in the woods 🙂 \nOver this winter and spring we will be working in a new compartment in Lea & Paget’s Wood: coppicing\, felling\, tree planting and fencing. \nCoppicing is an ancient woodland management technique that was once used to ensure a regular supply of timber and firewood. Coppicing also creates a range of habitats for plants and wildlife – dramatically increasing the diversity of species that thrive in these areas. \nWhere oak is felled\, we will be manufacturing (by hand) risers and posts for new footsteps that we will install in Nupend Wood over the summer months. \nIf you would like to come along and help your local wildlife\, contact Martin Hales at wildwaysmartin@btinternet.com or call him on 01432 860438. \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:The start of our exciting Autumn Programme of Fringe Events 2025. We are pleased to present:-\nJulie Mackay – To Hunt a Killer \nJulie\, who now lives locally\, joined the police force in the 1980s when “Life on Mars” was still popular on TV and\, over the next 30 years or so\, she worked mostly as a detective. She found she had a passion for murder which culminated in a career high in solving a cold case some 31years after the offence. Despite many challenges and much enjoyment along the way she finished as Detective Superintendent In charge of a regional murder team.  \nThis talk is about some of those challenges and her journey in policing. It offers some insight into the Melanie Road case\, which she wrote about in her best seller “To Hunt a Killer.” She now works as an independent consultant conducting reviews involving domestic abuse and homicide or suicide alongside international charity work and media. \n£10 Please contact Sue Pope to book a place. \nAll events take place at the Pavilion and advance booking is essential.

DESCRIPTION:The Community Library was opened in 2012\, with the help of the Parish Council and use of the Community Room at Faulkner House. \nIt is a warm comfortable room with easy chairs and everyone is welcome for a chat and a cuppa. \nThere is a large selection of fiction and non-fiction\, and a strong section on local history\, travel and walking books/OS maps. \nWith over 5000 items including DVDs and CDs and a good choice of children’s books\, there is something for everyone. \nWe have excellent links with St Mary’s School and welcome pre-school children every Wednesday in term time to borrow books and hear a story. \nAll residents of Fownhope and nearby villages are eligible to join and membership is free thanks to the friendly volunteer team\, help from the Parish Council and donations from the Friends of Fownhope Library.

DESCRIPTION:The Fownhope Environment Group brings together village people and Parish Council to undertake activities that benefit the environment of Fownhope and positively impact climate and ecology. This year’s theme for our local work together is Habitats\, though we also cover a range of local interests and activities relating to biodiversity\, carbon reduction and climate. \nOver the past few years the group has been busy – including: \n\nSetting up Fownhope’s popular Community Car Club\nDeveloping the always-ready-for-action ‘Fownhope Wheelbarrows’ group – taking on works that help care for our local environment\nDeveloping and promoting the village ‘Dark Skies’ policy and activities\nSupporting Citizen Science activities to assess pollution of local waterways including the River Wye\nDeveloping Fownhope Parish Council’s Declaration of a Climate Emergency – and working with local partners to put in place actions to support this declaration\nArranging village visits to Envirosort\, and liaising with Herefordshire Council to understand and share recycling opportunities locally\nFundraising and coordinating the installation of the community EV charger that now lives beside the Pavilion\nSupporting the planting of local native plants in hedgerows of Freemans new build houses\nDeveloping a sequence of ‘Activity Sunday’ events that brought varied environmental experts along to the village\n… initiating conversations about the development of this very calendar as a resource for local activities.\n\nEveryone is welcome to come along to our meetings – they are friendly and fun\, and usually last about an hour – sometimes a little longer. \nThe group is currently co-chaired by Gareth Williams (from the Parish Council) and Kate Gathercole (from the local community). \n  \n  \n
