DESCRIPTION:The Community Library was opened in 2012\, with the help of the Parish Council and use of the Community Room at Faulkner House. \nIt is a warm comfortable room with easy chairs and everyone is welcome for a chat and a cuppa. \nThere is a large selection of fiction and non-fiction\, and a strong section on local history\, travel and walking books/OS maps. \nWith over 5000 items including DVDs and CDs and a good choice of children’s books\, there is something for everyone. \nWe have excellent links with St Mary’s School and welcome pre-school children every Wednesday in term time to borrow books and hear a story. \nAll residents of Fownhope and nearby villages are eligible to join and membership is free thanks to the friendly volunteer team\, help from the Parish Council and donations from the Friends of Fownhope Library.

DESCRIPTION:Join our friendly and active group as we carry out conservation work in local nature reserves. \nIt’s always a good day in the woods 🙂 \nOver this winter and spring we will be working in a new compartment in Lea & Paget’s Wood: coppicing\, felling\, tree planting and fencing. \nCoppicing is an ancient woodland management technique that was once used to ensure a regular supply of timber and firewood. Coppicing also creates a range of habitats for plants and wildlife – dramatically increasing the diversity of species that thrive in these areas. \nWhere oak is felled\, we will be manufacturing (by hand) risers and posts for new footsteps that we will install in Nupend Wood over the summer months. \nIf you would like to come along and help your local wildlife\, contact Martin Hales at wildwaysmartin@btinternet.com or call him on 01432 860438. \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Mary Shelley and the making of Frankenstein\nWe are delighted to be welcoming back internationally renowned poet and biographer – and author of “In search of Mary Shelley” – Professor Fiona Sampson MBE who will be giving this talk. \nMary Shelley\, the wife of Percy Shelley the romantic poet and philosopher\, wrote the gothic novel Frankenstein in 1818 whilst still a young woman and the book’s influence has spread worldwide. It’s been adapted to the silver screen on several occasions – perhaps most famously in the 1931 production starring Boris Karloff. Most of us will remember his portrayal of the shambling “monster”\, but the novel itself is a beautifully written classic which shares the Romantic emphasis on the sublime power of nature. DESCRIPTION:The Community Library was opened in 2012\, with the help of the Parish Council and use of the Community Room at Faulkner House. \nIt is a warm comfortable room with easy chairs and everyone is welcome for a chat and a cuppa. \nThere is a large selection of fiction and non-fiction\, and a strong section on local history\, travel and walking books/OS maps. \nWith over 5000 items including DVDs and CDs and a good choice of children’s books\, there is something for everyone. \nWe have excellent links with St Mary’s School and welcome pre-school children every Wednesday in term time to borrow books and hear a story. \nAll residents of Fownhope and nearby villages are eligible to join and membership is free thanks to the friendly volunteer team\, help from the Parish Council and donations from the Friends of Fownhope Library.
