DESCRIPTION:Fownhope’s dark skies are one of our treasures — and on Saturday 11 April we have a chance to explore them in depth. \nAstrophotographer Keith Maslin will be joining us for an illustrated evening of images\, insight and conversation. The first part of the evening will feature a talk and slideshow showcasing Keith’s astrophotography\, along with a practical look at how the images are captured. Keith will also be bringing some of his equipment\, giving a hands-on insight into the cameras\, lenses and tracking gear involved. \nThe second half of the evening will open into discussion. Keith is keen to answer questions — whether about getting started in astrophotography or about how we as individuals\, and as a village\, can help protect and enhance Fownhope’s dark skies. Having already explored the village’s Dark Skies work\, he may have a few questions for us too. \nThe event is free to attend\, but we would be grateful for donations on the night to help cover the costs of putting it on. \nRefreshments will be available. \nAll welcome.

DESCRIPTION:The start of our exciting Autumn Programme of Fringe Events 2025. We are pleased to present:-\nJulie Mackay – To Hunt a Killer \nJulie\, who now lives locally\, joined the police force in the 1980s when “Life on Mars” was still popular on TV and\, over the next 30 years or so\, she worked mostly as a detective. She found she had a passion for murder which culminated in a career high in solving a cold case some 31years after the offence. Despite many challenges and much enjoyment along the way she finished as Detective Superintendent In charge of a regional murder team.  \nThis talk is about some of those challenges and her journey in policing. It offers some insight into the Melanie Road case\, which she wrote about in her best seller “To Hunt a Killer.” She now works as an independent consultant conducting reviews involving domestic abuse and homicide or suicide alongside international charity work and media. \n£10 Please contact Sue Pope to book a place. \nAll events take place at the Pavilion and advance booking is essential.

DESCRIPTION:Mary Shelley and the making of Frankenstein\nWe are delighted to be welcoming back internationally renowned poet and biographer – and author of “In search of Mary Shelley” – Professor Fiona Sampson MBE who will be giving this talk. \nMary Shelley\, the wife of Percy Shelley the romantic poet and philosopher\, wrote the gothic novel Frankenstein in 1818 whilst still a young woman and the book’s influence has spread worldwide. It’s been adapted to the silver screen on several occasions – perhaps most famously in the 1931 production starring Boris Karloff. Most of us will remember his portrayal of the shambling “monster”\, but the novel itself is a beautifully written classic which shares the Romantic emphasis on the sublime power of nature. SUMMARY:The Restoration of Mordiford Mill
DESCRIPTION:“I have been interested in watermills ever since the woodwork master at school put up a notice for volunteers to help at Finch Foundry\, Sticklepath\, near Oakhampton in the late 1960s.  The desire to restore a mill was compelling and in the mid-1980s I found Mordiford Mill advertised in Mill News. The miller had done a midnight flit in 1935\, unable to pay the rent.  After which\, the Home Guard aka Dad’s Army\, built slit shooting holes in the walls during the Second World War to defend the village.
