SUMMARY:St Michael's Hospice Open Gardens
DESCRIPTION:Each year\, St Michael’s Hospice runs a series of Open Gardens to raise funds. \nSet on a quiet country lane\, Stoneleigh is a short stroll from Fownhope’s pretty medieval church. Enter through the front gate and pause to admire the tranquil ponds\, alive with plump\, brightly coloured fish. \nThe back garden has been recently professionally redesigned to create movement\, interest\, and surprise. A uniquely shaped lawn\, reminiscent of an electric guitar replaces traditional straight lines and is framed by softly scalloped flower beds. Stepping stones wind beneath rose arches\, leading to a narrow but useful boundary path. \nPlanted in 2025\, the garden truly comes alive in summer. In July\, drifts of Astrantia\, blue Geraniums\, and Heucheras are joined by waving Anemones\, creamy white Gladioli\, and glorious roses\, creating a rich tapestry of colour and texture. \nLook to the southeast to spot the magnificent trees beyond the boundary\, home to large communal rookeries\, and if you’re lucky\, you may witness an impressive chattering aerial display. \nIf time allows\, visitors are welcome to pop into our garden letterpress workshop for a short demonstration using traditional metal type.

SUMMARY:Walk & Talk at Siege Wood
DESCRIPTION:Mark O’Brien will lead a Walk & Talk in Seige Wood and Buckenhill Wood near Woolhope on Saturday 25th April.  Anyone wanting to walk to the venue\, meet 10am at The Skallenge\, St George’s or if going by car\, park at Seige Wood 10:45 am.  Mark will talk us through the conservation work being done in the woods\, including wildlife and vegetation. There may also be an opportunity to meet his Old English Horned cattle at the end.  No charge but donations at the start to The Friends of Woolhope Church would be appreciated.

DESCRIPTION:An informal and welcoming gardening-themed afternoon will be held in the Community Room at Faulkner House on Wednesday 15 April\, from 2–4pm\, while the library is open. \nThere will be a selection of gardening books to browse\, with some available to take home. Vegetable and flower seeds from the recent Seed Swap will be shared\, along with tomato plants for anyone who would like to grow their own. \nTea and cakes will be available\, providing a chance to meet others and enjoy a relaxed afternoon. \nThe event also aims to raise awareness of the library and the Community Room as a space for local use\, as many residents are not yet familiar with it. \nThere is no charge to attend\, but donations towards new library books are welcome.

DESCRIPTION:Are you a small-scale cider producer?  \nWhether small scale means a couple of demijohns or a couple of hundred litres\, you know who you are – you make cider for pleasure not profit\, it’s made for the consumption of you and your friends\, and not for the “general public”.  \nIf that is you then you might be interested in joining the Cider Shed\, a small group of like-minded individuals interested in comparing notes and learning from each other.  \nWhat is that white mould that sometimes forms on the top of the cider while it’s fermenting? Is it dangerous? Can I use just desert apples or must I only use cider ones? Do different yeasts make a difference to the final product? Why is my cider so incredibly – unbearably – dry? DESCRIPTION:Fownhope’s dark skies are one of our treasures — and on Saturday 11 April we have a chance to explore them in depth. \nAstrophotographer Keith Maslin will be joining us for an illustrated evening of images\, insight and conversation. The first part of the evening will feature a talk and slideshow showcasing Keith’s astrophotography\, along with a practical look at how the images are captured. Keith will also be bringing some of his equipment\, giving a hands-on insight into the cameras\, lenses and tracking gear involved. \nThe second half of the evening will open into discussion. Keith is keen to answer questions — whether about getting started in astrophotography or about how we as individuals\, and as a village\, can help protect and enhance Fownhope’s dark skies. Having already explored the village’s Dark Skies work\, he may have a few questions for us too. \nThe event is free to attend\, but we would be grateful for donations on the night to help cover the costs of putting it on. \nRefreshments will be available. \nAll welcome.

His last job before retirement was as a Senior Countryside Ranger in Cambridgeshire where he earned the nickname “Ranger Jim” through his regular Wednesday slot at BBC Radio Cambridge. DESCRIPTION:✨ A Little Bench-Warming Before the Christmas Tractor Run ✨ \nHello there — it’s me\, the new Dark Skies Bench. I know you’re really coming out for the Christmas Tractor Run (I’ve heard the excitement…)\, but if you’ve got a moment before the big parade\, I’d love you to drop by. \nI’ll be waiting by the Pavilion from 4:30pm to 5:30pm\, along with some very kind humans serving mulled wine – alcoholic and non-alcoholic varietes – and mince pies. Consider it a gentle warm-up before you wander over to Coo Corner for your hot chocolate and hot dogs — I hear they’re excellent at keeping fingers and spirits toasty. \nThen at around 6:10pm\, the tractors will sweep through in all their glowing\, jingling glory. I don’t blame you for rushing off — it’s quite the spectacle\, even from where I’m sitting. \nSo come early\, say hello\, lean back for a minute\, and then head off to claim your perfect tractor-spotting position. DESCRIPTION:The Fownhope Environment Group brings together village people and Parish Council to undertake activities that benefit the environment of Fownhope and positively impact climate and ecology. This year’s theme for our local work together is Habitats\, though we also cover a range of local interests and activities relating to biodiversity\, carbon reduction and climate. \nOver the past few years the group has been busy – including: \n\nSetting up Fownhope’s popular Community Car Club\nDeveloping the always-ready-for-action ‘Fownhope Wheelbarrows’ group – taking on works that help care for our local environment\nDeveloping and promoting the village ‘Dark Skies’ policy and activities\nSupporting Citizen Science activities to assess pollution of local waterways including the River Wye\nDeveloping Fownhope Parish Council’s Declaration of a Climate Emergency – and working with local partners to put in place actions to support this declaration\nArranging village visits to Envirosort\, and liaising with Herefordshire Council to understand and share recycling opportunities locally\nFundraising and coordinating the installation of the community EV charger that now lives beside the Pavilion\nSupporting the planting of local native plants in hedgerows of Freemans new build houses\nDeveloping a sequence of ‘Activity Sunday’ events that brought varied environmental experts along to the village\n… initiating conversations about the development of this very calendar as a resource for local activities.\n\nEveryone is welcome to come along to our meetings – they are friendly and fun\, and usually last about an hour – sometimes a little longer. \nThe group is currently co-chaired by Gareth Williams (from the Parish Council) and Kate Gathercole (from the local community). \n  \n  \n
